In 1846, as British ended the Corn Law, which made Canada went to trade with U.S, and so they started the reciprocity in 1854. In 1864 after American ended the reciprocity with Canada for getting back at them since they helped the southern states of U.S. during the Civil War, also Fenian Soldiers were invading Canada during the 1860s, and Canada couldn’t do anything about it since C.E. and C.W. was in Political Deadlock. The only solution for all these crises was to confederate among all the colonies, because then the deadlock will be solved by having more seats for the other colonies; the economic crisis will be solved by having trade among the colonies themselves; and the Fenian Raids won’t affect Canada more than they used to after Canada had a better defense. Sir John A. Macdonald and the other famous politician saw the confederation as the only way of saving Canada, so they held their first conference in Charlottetown September 1st, 1864. Each province was contending with its own "anti-Confederation" forces; and Newfoundland would reject union outright; the prosperous provinces of Maritimes think that they would lose their autonomy, but the Fenian Raids and the threat of U.S. taking over the continent had made the citizens of the colonies worrying about their safety (Canada’s Prime Ministers). Later in October, nineteen more delegates from Maritimes Colonies and the twelve delegates from C.E. and C.W. gathered together in Quebec city and eventually agreed on one point –e69da5e6ba907a64362 the union must be a strong one that could not be broken by any one province, and the central government must have great power. The plan worked out is known as the seventy-two resolutions. With Macdonald playing the leading role in promoting confederation, he drafted the British North America Act, which defined the federal system by which the four provinces were united on July 1, 1867. Later, as John A. Macdonald was elected as the first Prime Minister of the new Dominion government, he Macdonald's first term in office was marked by nation building. He added North-West Territories in 1869; Red River Settlement (renamed as Manitoba) in 1870; British Columbia in 1871; and Prince Edward Island in 1873 as provinces, and also the North-West Territories that he had acquired in 1869 would eventually become Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1905 (Johnson). He also started building a transcontinental railway – Intercolonial Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Though that Sir John A. Macdonald had been successful in politics, but he still made mistakes, such as the habit of drinking heavily or accepting illicit fund ($360,000) in 1872 from Sir Allan Hugh who thought that he would to be awarded the lucrative contract to construct the Canadian Pacific Railway – Also known as Pacific Scandal which interrupted his terms of Prime Minister a year after. Later, Macdonald came up with a system of tariffs that protected Canadian product from foreign import, especially U.S., and the system was called National Policy. It resulted in the resurrection of Macdonald's political career, and the Conservative party, in the general election of 1878 (Johnson).
