二者都表来示拾起、搭载的意思，区别在于pick up是一个动词词组，而pick-up是一个单词，其他并无区别。
在英文写作中，连字符（-）一般被用来连接或区隔两个以上的单字，以构成复合词和形容词词组，例如 carbon-based(碳基)、long-term(长期)、over-the-counter(拐角)。
而且不应与破折号“–”和“—”混为一谈。连字符也常见于书写英文数字时，如：twenty-three (93)和 eighty-nine (89)等。
